Collaborative Funding for Complex Challenges in the UK Financial Services Industry

UKFin+ bridges the gap between academia and the financial services industry by supporting collaborative research that addresses the sector’s complex long-term challenges. By focusing on high-impact challenges, the project aims to sustain the international competitiveness of the UK’s financial services industry. As one route to impact, UKFin+ includes £1m in funding streams to encourage partnerships between academic researchers and non-academic organisations.

A word from our directors:

We are delighted to unveil the UKFin+ research agenda. The research agenda highlights opportunities for collaborative research to address the most pressing long-term challenges facing the UK’s financial services sector. The agenda presents six areas of real-world importance – from harnessing disruptive technologies to promoting financial inclusion and wellbeing – and explores the enabling factors such as data, skills, and co-design that are essential to address these challenges effectively.

The agenda is the product of many months of effort, being shaped in no small part by stakeholder engagement and input at our events and workshops. We would like to thank everyone who has helped to put it together.

UKFin+’s ultimate goal is to encourage collaboration and innovation by providing a framework that aligns research priorities with the needs of industry, regulators, and wider society. We hope this agenda offers structured insight to researchers, practitioners, and funders, thereby supporting the development of proposals and funding calls that will help ensure the UK maintains its position as a global leader in financial innovation.

Inspiring the Next Wave of Research

This agenda aims to serve as a resource and inspiration for academic researchers and funding applicants. While not exhaustive, it offers a framework to inspire and guide proposals that address the evolving priorities of the UK financial services sector.
