UKFin+ Research Showcase 2024

November 20th was the very first UKFin+ Research Showcase, it was a real treat to hear from so many of our funded projects as well as two inspiring keynote speakers. We hope our participants enjoyed the event as much as we did!

Here’s a recap of the day’s events:

Morning Highlights: Technology-Enabled Inclusion

The day began with a keynote from Joanne Dewar, who spoke about her Project Nemo, aimed at accelerating disability inclusion in FinTech. Joanne’s presentation challenged us to rethink accessibility and inclusion in financial technologies. For those who’d like to view the videos she shared please visit their YouTube channel.

We followed this up with presentations from our funded projects focusing on Technology-Enabled Inclusion:

  • Designing Out Economic Abuse in the UK Banking Industry by Dr. Clare Wiper
  • The Impact of FinTech Apps on Consumer Wellbeing by Dr. Reinhard A. Weisser
  • Inclusive FinTech: Co-Creating Inclusive Future Financial Technologies with Disabled Communities by Dr. Arthur Theil
  • Designing Age-Friendly Digital Banking Technologies by Dr. Nicholas Micallef

For a deeper dive into these projects, visit our Funded Projects page.

The morning concluded with a panel discussion on financial inclusion, chaired by Karen Elliott (UKFin+ Director). Thank you to all our speakers and attendees for the engaging panel discussion!

The picture above is by the very talented Jenny Leonard who created a live illustration of our discussions on Financial Inclusion. It’s a brilliant depiction of the topics we covered and it is very interesting to watch her work as we go along!

Afternoon Highlights: Game-Changing Technology

The afternoon began with a presentation from Professor John Vines, another UKFin+ Director, on how to apply for funding. If you’re interested in learning more, visit our page on how to apply for funding or contact us at [email protected].

Next, we shifted our focus to Game-Changing Technology, starting with a keynote from Carsten Maple. Carsten discussed the impact of large language models in finance: towards trustworthy adoption. His project, FAIR: Framework for Responsible Adoption of AI in Financial Services, aligns closely with UKFin+’s mission. You can learn more about FAIR here.

This afternoon’s project presentations focused on Technology enabled regulation and infrastructure:

  • FinTech Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Online Black Markets by Dr. Endrit Kromidha
  • Unfed: Selective Forgetting in Federal Financial Applications by Abhirup Ghosh
  • Enhancing Consumer Knowledge of Crypto Assets by Geetika Jain
  • Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Enhance and Understand Regulatory Compliance in the Investment Management Industry by Dr. Barry Quinn

You can explore these projects further by visiting our funded projects page.

We wrapped up the afternoon with another dynamic panel discussion, this time on large language models, AI, and their transformative potential in finance. Chaired by Aad van Moorsel, the conversation was so engaging that we could have easily extended it further!

Once again, Jenny Leonard delivered a stunning visual representation of the day’s discussions. Her vibrant illustration of the afternoon’s themes provided the perfect visual summary of our session on Game-Changing Technology.
