Greenwashing Analysis in Practice: Trialling an Explainable ESG Disclosure Assessment Tool with a Financial Services Partner

Project Summary

Companies increasingly publish Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) claims in sustainability reports, but it is often difficult to judge whether those claims are clear, measurable and supported by evidence. This project builds on our earlier UKFin+ Pilot on Greenwashing Analysis and works with CYKUBE, a UK fintech partner, to explore how an existing ESG disclosure analysis tool can support practical financial services work.

The tool helps analysts and advisers review sustainability reports in a more structured way by identifying key ESG statements and linking them back to supporting evidence in the report. It also uses external context, such as relevant news and market signals, to give a broader view of how corporate disclosures compare with external perceptions.

Building on a working demonstrator developed during the earlier pilot, this project will trial the tool with CYKUBE in an ESG disclosure review workflow and evaluate how useful, understandable and appropriate the tool is for wider operational use in the financial and commercial sectors.

The overall aim is to support clearer ESG reporting, better-informed decision-making and greater transparency in financial services. This could reduce the time required for ESG disclosure review and improve consistency across analysts.
