Responsible Intelligence: Preparing Students for the Ethical and Effective Use of AI in Finance
Project Summary
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how financial services operate, from fraud detection and risk management to the use of generative AI for analysing text, classifying information and producing meeting minutes. Yet while most UK finance companies now use AI, there is a growing shortage of graduates who can apply these technologies responsibly and effectively.
This project helps close that gap. Working with FinTech West and it collaborators, students will learn how to prepare and analyse financial data, build and test models, and compare their own results with AI-generated outputs. By identifying errors, bias, and overconfidence in automated analysis, they will develop the critical judgment employers increasingly expect in an AI-enabled workplace. FinTech West professionals will co-design challenges, deliver guest lectures, and provide feedback on student work, linking learning directly to industry practice. The project will also create a Responsible Fintech Education Toolkit containing datasets, exercises, code templates, and recorded talks. This will be shared nationally through the UKFin+ Network to help build a more ethical and AI-literate talent pipeline for UK finance.
